Official Statement from the Shinnecock Indian Nation Board of Trustees Shinnecock Indian Nation Tribal Trustees Chairman Randy King, Trustee Charles Smith and Trustee James Eleazer On Judge Thomas Platt's Ruling Federally Acknowledging Nation As Indian Tribe The Shinnecock Indian Nation Tribal Board of Trustees issued the following statement: "Today, the Federal Court issued a historic ruling acknowledging the Shinnecock Indian Nation as an Indian Tribe describing the facts of the case as, ‘for the most part, undisputed' and ruling that ‘the Shinnecocks clearly meet the criteria for tribal status.' Given U.S. District Court Judge Thomas C. Platt's decision, we believe it's time for the State of New York and the Town of Southampton to stop fighting the Nation and work with us to reach a comprehensive, and just solution to our claims. It is time for justice."
##### The Shinnecock Indian Nation is one of the longest, continuously self-governing Tribes in the country. The 1,500-member State recognized Tribe believes that revenues from a gaming facility will help bring true self-reliance to the Shinnecock people and improve the quality of life.
