In the news the Shinnecock Nation has been committed to preserving our ancestral homeland and its natural environment. As our lands were taken we adapted our economy and our way of life. Still, we continued to preserve and protect our remaining lands while we struggled to become self-reliant.

Sara Chase, a member of the Shinnecock Nation and of the Hoopa Valley Tribal Nation, is a con-testant in the 2012 Miss Indian World pageant. The event takes place at the annual Gathering of Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, NM, this year from April 26-28th.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. ~ The 2011 Miss Shinnecock Teen Pageant will be held on Saturday, June 11, from 6 to 9 p.m., in the Southampton High School auditorium—a larger venue to accommodate the overwhelming crowd that swelled beyond the doors of the Southampton Inn Ballroom in 2009.

SHINNECOCK NATION ELECTS FRED BESS IN TRUSTEE RUNOFF ELECTION
Shinnecock Indian Reservation, L.I., New York —In an historic runoff election between incumbent Trustee Lance Gumbs and former Trustee Frederick C. Bess, voting members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation selected Mr. Bess to fill the third Trustee Board seat.
Voting took place today at the Shinnecock Community Center from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
