Shinnecock Hosts 60th Annual Powwow

Southampton, New York - Rainbows of glistening beads, feathers and fringe swaying as graceful dancers, proud yet humble, enter the dance arena. The big drum dancing platform at Shinnecock. This is Indian Land. Grand Entry. History and culture. Words of welcome, prayers, flag song- this is respect. Aromas of chowders, succotash, fry bread and venison drifting through the air; arts and crafts of tribal people from throughout the Americas; ancient ways, modern business. This is a gathering of the People. This is a Powwow.

From Friday, September 1st thru Monday, September 4th, 2006, hundreds of members from over 40 tribes and nations will join with the Shinnecock for the 60th Annual Shinnecock Indian Powwow. This annual event is a celebration of heritage and the major fund raiser for the Shinnecock Nation and the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church.

Championship intertribal dance and singing competitions are the highlight of the powwow, attracting dancers from as far away as Mexico, California, Arizona, Oklahoma and Canada and as near as Shinnecock, Mastic, Long Island, and new England. Traditional and contemporary performances include the Thunder Bird Sisters, Shinnecock's own 2001 Native American Music (NAMMY) award winners for best Country Folk group; Litefoot, an Oklahoma Cherokee rapper who in 2005 won the Artist of the Year NAMMY award; the Tlacopan Aztec Dancers from Mexico, Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers, and flutist Derek Whirlwind.

Demonstrations of bow and arrow making, archery, stone, wood and antler carving, bead, leather and feather work, wampum and silver jewelry making serve to inform and education the public on other aspects of Native American traditions. A large array of items by award winning artists will appeal to serious collectors. Stop by booths to buy books, tee shirts and souvenirs. These include authentic Navajo rugs, pottery, beaded moose hide moccasins, baskets, porcupine quill adornments, paintings, silver, gold, turquoise, wampum and beaded jewelry, and carvings made by Shinnecock, Montauk, Oneida, Mohawk, Narragansett, and many other native artisans. The powwow provides the public a unique entertaining and educational opportunity to learn some of the cultural arts and traditions of the indigenous people of the western hemisphere.
