May 13, 2003 AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE SHINNECOCK NATION For many years, the Shinnecock Nation has been exploring ways to achieve self-sufficiency and to increase the standard of living of the members of our tribe. Whatever course we take, the Shinnecock Nation will act within the framework accorded by nation-to-nation treaties. Just as important, everything we do will be in accordance with our ancient traditions of respect for our people, the environment, and our neighbors. In the coming weeks, we look forward to discussing our vision for self-reliance with members of the community and with elected officials before taking any action. We intend to realize our potential as a sovereign nation provided
under the law, and to take our rightful place as contributing
members of the Hamptons community. |
