STATEMENT OF APPRECIATION FOR SUPPORT OF THE SHINNECOCK NATION AND PLANS FOR OUR CASINO The 57th Annual Shinnecock Indian Pow-Wow held over this Labor Day Weekend was a celebration of support and outpouring of respect and warmth for the Shinnecock Nation and our plans for self-sufficiency through Indian gaming. From the opening day of the Pow-Wow on Friday evening, August 29 to the last day on September 1, we had a continuous stream of people coming to the tent that housed information on the casino, to sign a petition and to offer whatever assistance they could on the behalf of the Shinnecock Nation. The overwhelming number of petition signatures is a clear and vibrant message to the politicians that there is, in fact, a tremendous amount of support from the outside community both here in the Hamptons and throughout Long Island for a Shinnecock Indian gaming endeavor. It is equally clear that the residents of the East End are far more concerned about communication and collaboration than “craps”, as stated by Supervisor Heaney in his paid advertisement. We hope that the local officials will listen to the voice of the people they have been elected to serve and respect their wishes on behalf of the inherent rights of the Shinnecock Nation and its people.
